Calculus I
Calculus I Introductory analytic geometry and calculus. Topics include limits, continuity, differential calculus of algebraic and trigonometric functions with applications to curve sketching, optimization problems and related rates, the indefinite and definite integral, area under a curve, and the fundamental theorem of calculus. Inverse functions and the logarithmic and exponential functions are also introduced along with applications to exponential growth and decay.
I love Prof. Proctor. It should be stated I took this class having already taken Calc I, but she really makes this class geared for those who haven't. She makes herself very available for any help and provides a lot of good resources for anyone to use. She is super kind and sweet, and I can't say enough good things about her. She likes to get into the theory of math, which can sometimes be confusing, but otherwise, the class is great. The exams are pretty straightforward and easier/the same as homework or in-class problems. She doesn't try to trick you on them. When grading, she is super nice and is purposefully looking for points to give you and what you did right. Homework counts for a lot of your grade, so prepare to have to do it before every class. I had a great experience in this class, especially with Proctor.

I found Professor Proctors teaching style fantastic and her enthusiasm was very refreshing. The course itself is not too difficult as she is very thorough with her teaching and is constantly checking for any questions. The homework is pretty straight forward and is good practice. The exams are a step up in difficulty from the homework but we are allowed a note card during them. I would very much recommend this course with Professor Proctor to anyone who needs to take Calc I.

Professor Morris-Wright really struggles to win my approval regarding her teaching of this course. Her lectures are subpar and tough to get through and she often deflects questions or gives very vague answers to the question. She isn't very accommodating of individual students needs and her exams are much harder than the homework and often presents material you've never considered. I'm not embellishing this review I just thoroughly have issues with her as an instructor.

Going into the class, I was initially nervous as I had not taken Calculus since my junior year of high school. This course quickly got me back up to speed of where I was. Roughly 10 homework problems due three times a week, very manageable, as for me homework never took longer than an hour to complete. Midterms are only 6-7 problems that are slightly more lengthy than what you've been doing on homework. Overall a very good refresher for me, and I feel very adequately prepared for Calc II or Linear Algebra, as well fulfilling a requirement for a variety of majors. Your experience may vary quite drastically if you have not taken a Pre-calc or Calc class before, but Proctor has made it very apparent that she is more than willing to take extra time to work with you, as long as you communicate you need the help.

This was one of the best Calculus courses I have ever taken! I came into the class with a decent background in Calc, so the material seemed quite straightforward and easy to understand. I could see how, if you didn't have any prior Calc knowledge, the course might be slightly more challenging, but overall I think it's completely manageable. Professor Proctor is also incredibly kind and understanding, which made the learning environment very comfortable. There is graded homework due every class with a "no late assignments" policy, so sometimes it was a little hard to keep up. However, the homework itself isn't too conceptually challenging, just time-consuming when you have the class 4 days a week.

Prof. Proctor was born to be a professor. She is helpful, friendly, approachable, and really wants her students to do well. There is a higher volume of homework but it is worth it for the sake of forced studying/review. She is helpful in office hours and in class. While it is fast paced (due to the fact that she must cover everything in one semester), she does her best to break down concepts and is one of the best math professors or teachers that I have ever had. It is easier if you have taken calc before but I hadn't taken calc since senior year of high school (so three years ago) and am doing totally fine in the class. Highly recommend to take calc with her.

The course required a significant amount of time and effort, with assignments and readings that demanded close attention. Steve is an excellent teacher, presenting material clearly and effectively, and he is always willing to help students understand challenging concepts. However, he is also a tough grader, expecting a high level of mastery and thoroughness in assignments and exams. The exams themselves are challenging, testing not only on the core material but also requiring critical thinking and a deep understanding of the topics covered.

This class wasnt a requirement and I hate math so my experience is a bit biased but I found it quite challenging with the consistent homework and fast pace. We learn a new concept every class, do homework on it, and move on immediately. I struggled at first but after the first exam I got a sense of Proctor's style and reached out to her for extra help and did so much better from then on. Proctor is really kind and encouraging and enthusiastic and always happy to help, she really made the class so much better I can't imagine taking it with anyone else. She can get a bit off topic but its kind of fun I never minded.

I found this course very challenging, but if you put in the work, you will also find it very rewarding. Professor Albert is an amazing professor and an even better mathematician. Whether listening to her in lecture or meeting with her during a one-on-one meeting, she is very passionate about math and loves to work with students. I was scared of calculus, but she made me enjoy it!
Prof. Abbot is super fun. Hes so chill and really nice, he genuinely wants to help you. I struggled throughout the class but regular office hours helps IMMENSELY. There is word problem project that can work in a group with and homework is due before class every class.
Prof. Abbott was my favorite profesor this entire semester. I really struggled in this class but he made sure I was able to meet him whenever so we can go over the homework and everything I was so confused on. He makes it possible to learn. On top of that he is just a funny, nice, goofy man that loves teaching about math! W mans in my books
If you have taken Calc 1 in the past, this class will not be difficult for you. The exams are tough but very manageable. Professor Proctor is a fair grader and truly wants everyone to do well. The class is homework heavy, and it does take up a lot of time. However, this is expected for a class like Calculus. If you are taking this class because it is a prerequisite for a future class you wish to take, I recommend taking it with Professor Proctor as she is very mindful of this circumstance.

Professor Proctor is an incredibly nice and understanding person. Her exams and grading are fair. At times, explanations can be either unclear or drag on. I was not a fan of her style of teaching. She writes lots of complete sentences on the board during lectures to explain what she's doing. Personally, I understand the substance better through numbers and concrete examples instead of straight definitions.

Prof. Abbot may be the best professor I have had at Middlebury so far. He is passionate about the material and teaches in a way that is intuitive and makes following what he is saying relatively easy. There is a homework grade, and 3 problem sets per week. Professor Proctor was amazing, providing students with great feedback on exams and lenient grading. The projects were very useful and she does a great job preparing students for other classes, regardless of the field or discipline. The class was fast-paced but when you do the homework and study for exams, it is difficult but worthwhile.
Holy shi* steve is the actual best. I've had a thing against math since highschool and taking this class was a 'I can prove to myself that I can do this' moment but despite going into it pretty negatively steve met me where i was at and made the course feel valuable.
He really really loves math, and it is evident. He genuinely enjoys working with his students and spends extra time beyond office hours to accommodate students if asked for. The class is not that hard, though there are some topics that we moved through really fast.
I really enjoyed taking the class with Professor Wright. She provides ample opportunities for students to practice the lesson taught, doesn't overload the class with homework, and allows students to learn from mistakes. The practice exams, worksheets, and modules she posts really helped me get through this class without any trouble.
Steve is an amazing professor and is incredibly passionate about making sure all of his students feel comfortable with the material and have a fair chance to express their understanding. He is very approachable and I would most certainly take a class with him again.
I enjoyed this course although I had already taken Calculus 1 in high school. It was very nice to review the material and I found myself learning stuff that I did not remember learning in high school. For exams, students are given a notecard which is very beneficial in studying and gathering knowledge for the exam.
While definitely not an easy class, Professor Proctor managed to make the experience quite enjoyable. She brings a lot of enthusiasm and is always willing to provide extra support to students who need it. There is a lot of homework for this class (but this isn't unique to Proctor's section), but she drops your lowest three homework scores which gives you some flexibility during crunch-periods. She is also quite lenient with her grading, and allows you to bring a note card to the exams which is great.

No issue at all with Prof Proctor she's so sweet and really cares about your well-being. The only issue I had was with the calc I course itself. There's just too much material to cover in 12 weeks so it's a really hard intro course. Homework always took 3+ hours but I also just don't understand math that easily. If you have to take calc though, definitely take with Proctor!
Pretty forgiving (you can miss 1 lab, 2 homework assignments (if you do a self-care thing), 1 edfinity exercise and you get extra credit on a couple of things). She puts us on study groups, which I think was really helpful. She uploads literally all the material we go through in class on Canvas with the answers in a clearly structured schedule, which I really appreciate. Pretty easy if you have a strong background in math and she explains concepts clearly, though the fast pace may be tough if you don't.

This was a fantastic course. Professor Abbott is amazing. Although Calculus is not easy, he made it fun and feel very reasonable. The class consisted of problem sets and exams. I thoroughly enjoyed this class.
Professor Proctor is an amazing and understanding professor. Since I had to take this class, I am happy that it was with her. It was difficult, though, which is expected for a calc class, but she really did make the experience good.
There are three homework assignments weekly, 2 give you 7 attempts to answer all questions. And the other one has you explain how you got the answer to certain questions from those 2 assignments. You may retake every quiz.
Overall, this class was fairly easy. Emily Proctor is an amazing professor. I will say this class moves very slowly, so if you have past experience with calc. Maybe go to calc 2. Love this class tho, exams can be difficult but nothing too crazy
Class was manageable but the weekly problem sets required long hours and were difficult. The exams were manageable and much easier than the problem sets. Professor was very accommodating and really helpful if you ask for it.
Steve is the BEST, I'm not a "math person" and calc definitely wasn't my best class, but he's always available for office hours and super accommodating of any student's needs. He loves math and forms close relationships with a lot of his students, super nice guy. Exams are pretty tough.
Emily was a fantastic professor and if anyone gets the chance they should 1000% take a class with her. She was not only an effective instructor but also was very understanding and fair in her assessments and evaluations. She should definitely be acknowledged for her skill as an instructor but more importantly her ability to be a human being, which other professors seem to forget.
Steve is a great professor. He is very engaging and invested in his students. He explains things very well. He doesn't give hard homework; however, he is a hard grader. The course material is very interesting and applicable to many majors.
Professor Rose is very kind and accommodating. This class is quite difficult for me because I'm not really a math person, but going in for office hours/TA hours helps a lot with homework assignments. Prof. Rose is a very fast-paced lecturer, but again, getting extra help will be useful if the material is harder for you to understand. Quizzes were hard but if you do well on the homework and show up to labs, you should be able to get a good final grade

Professor Abbott is super enthusiastic; he's the only math teacher I've ever had who has actually made math fun! In Calc I he lectures for half of the class which he keeps very engaging and for the second half we work together in groups to complete practice problems. Professor Albert is very nice and helpful. She answers any questions someone might have and makes sure her students understand the material. You also get a note sheet for each exam which is nice. You have a week to complete the two weekly homework assignments (one written one online with infinite attempts) which is pretty reasonable. If you put in effort you will do well in this class. I took AP calc AB in high school and I felt like this course was pretty similar to that but if you do not have a background in calc I think that Professor Albert does a great job of explaining topics.

Steve Abbott is fantastic! He is energetic, kind, and passionate. I was not looking forward to taking calc but now it is one of my favorite classes. His teaching is effective and he is very good at explaining things. The exams are pretty tricky but Steve is a very fair grader. Overall this is a great class.
I had never taken a calculus class before, and Emily was the most understanding professor. I'm an econ major, so I needed calc to move into the theory classes, and I'm so grateful to have taken this class because my understanding of calc is so much more intuitive now thanks to my experience with her.
Calculus 1 was engaging with Professor Abbott being a passionate teacher, but the final exam posed challenges. The enthusiasm made concepts clear, yet the difficulty of the exam requires thorough preparation. Overall, a rewarding experience
Emily is honestly the most understanding person ever. She always seems enthusiastic to help an answer question during class and in office hours. She will take the time to help you and she doesn't make you feel bad if you're behind in understanding the material. The material itself can be somewhat challenging and it can feel totally overwhelming at first, but you get used to it. Also, you can't skip class. You'll be lost and find it hard to catch up after.

She goes super fast in class but she is always happy to answer your questions in class and during office hours. She is very understanding and gives credit for effort and her grading on exams is typically generous.
Professor Morris Wright is a nice woman. She offers a lot of help outside of class through office hours. Her tests aren't too hard as long as you study. Her lectures are pretty boring, and her explanations for concepts and problems are quite vague. I felt I needed to self-teach a lot of the material to be successful.
Prof. Abbott is amazing and the most stereotypical math prof. Hands down one of the best profs at Middlebury! The class is fast-paced, so make sure to actually read the chapter. One of my favorite classes so far!
The content can be difficult but Professor Abbott is clearly very enthusiastic which makes for a great class. It is mostly an effort based class and the midterms are pretty realistically based off of what we learned in class.

enjoyed the class, average amount of homework, exams a bit difficult. fast paced class, the professor is clear and very helpful and informed. I really enjoyed the class and even got to do some yoga. I would recommend.
Abbot is a great professor and is very accommodating to all situations. If this is your first time taking calculus, it's a great class to take with him. Exams are a bit difficult but if you go over the homework you should be fine.
This course was not too hard, and Professor Abbott was wonderful at keeping the class lighthearted and explaining anything asked with great detail. I would say that missing class is pretty tough for your overall learning, as it is relatively hard to catch up. One nice part of class though is that you will get an A for the semester with an 89 or above in his class.
Ms. Morris-Wright is seriously one of the nicest people I've ever met. The lectures are not too fast. The homework is not a big deal, just like once a week and it takes like two to three hours to complete.
Genuinely one of the nicest people I've ever met. The lectures are super fast paced but because of how much content is covered in class we have no readings. The homework is once a week and not too bad, 2-3 hours a week.

Homework was fairly reasonable and tests matched what was assigned. The class went pretty fast so if you fall behind in one area it’s pretty easy to get confused. Professor was very eager to help with any questions and explained things pretty clearly.
Prof Rose Morris-Wright is a nice person but not a good teacher. She goes too fast and gets nervous when she is teaching. attendance is a grade in the class and if you miss a class you will get a 0/1 on that day. There are 3 quizzes and a final that are worth 60% of your grade and they are very hard. I would take the class with someone else.
I already took calc and this was a light course. After being taught this before I can say that the prof is not teaching the material the best way. The homework is harder than the tests and the lectures have many examples and notes are easy to follow. 9ams aren’t so bad but it just makes the class harder to pay attention in.
Professor Rose is kind and caring professor. The quizzes are somewhat easy but they test your ability to recall information rather than asking very difficult questions. If you do the homeworks and edfinties, then there is no reason you cannot get an A
I really struggled in this class. Abbott went so fast in class and taught as if everyone had a solid background in calculus. However, once I started attending office hours, I got a better understanding of the course
Professor Rose is very nice and she is very enthusiastic about the material. However, it is hard to follow some of the lectures and the class can become a little repetitive. Test difficulty level is very uneven, it could be really easy or it could be very hard. Group work during labs is very helpful and I would definitely recommend making use of the TAs to get some extra help.
As someone who struggled with math in high school, I thought that Professor Morris-Wright was a rather clear lecturer. While there was a good amount of homework, I think that our study groups and other homework helped to reinforce the material.
I really enjoyed both this course and having Rose as a professor. She was very accommodating and wanted each student to learn and succeed. The homework was doable and translated into preparation for the exams.
