Beginning German
Beginning German Geared toward quick and early proficiency in comprehension and free expression. Grammatical structures are practiced through group activities and situational exercises (e.g., role-playing games and partner interviews). Active class participation by students is required and will be counted toward the final grade. Since this is an integrated approach, there will be laboratory assignments but no special drill sections. Classes meet five times a week. Students take GRMN 0102 as their winter term course.
I took it with Natalie and Florence co-teaching. There is at least an hour of homework for each class, a weekly vocabulary quiz, and additional larger exams. Homeworks cannot be made up once missed, and missing a homework will make the next class section harder for you. If you are enthusiastic about learning German, this course is really fun, keeps you engaged, and teaches you a lot of words and some culture knowledge too. I recommend going to office hours or showing up early in the FIC to make tea and chat with the professors; they are really nice people.

As any introductory class in a language, this class is very past paced with lots of HW. There is a reading quiz or chapter test every week and no breaks from constant new content. However, if you are willing to do the work, the class itself is very fun with lots of in-class activities and games.
German 101 is a course designed to open the door that leads into the world of German linguistics, culture, and history. If one wants to learn a language at Middlebury, I highly suggest they sign up for this course, as it shows what learning a language takes and where it can take you. Thomas is a highly effective teacher, and his greatest strengths are his high energy and enthusiasm.

Prof Huang is very kind and very engaging with her students. The class as a whole requires you to be alert because she loves to cold call, but it is never a big deal if you get it wrong or don't know the answer. She is very helpful in teaching the complexities of the german language and I would highly recommend her as a prof. There is a significant amount of homework every night in the form of practice problems on connect, but is otherwise a great class

This class is definitely a big time commitment and you have to be willing to put in the work. However, the structure works and you can clearly see the benefits from it. Florence is one of my favorite professors I've had, she is so fun and kind and genuinely cares about her students and their success. She is fair and understanding.
I would recommend this class to everyone. Professor Feiereisen is amazing and really cares about her students. I especially encourage freshmen to take this course as it really generates some feeling of belonging. Would love to take it again!
Ich liebe Florence. She is the best. She is very enthusiastic in class and very effective in teaching German and making us remember all the grammar and stuff. The class atmosphere is great. Great class, great prof.
Thomas was awesome, I enjoyed the class with him. He is very entertaining and has lots of really cool anecdotes about his time in Germany. He relates to students very well, and makes sure to develop a one-on-one relationship with each.
Viola is one of the best professors I had in Middlebury. She is really nice and always happy to help, and she is also very accommodating to students' needs. She explains concepts very clearly and she is just a sweet person. I love the German dpt.
Viola is super enthusiastic about teaching German. She does talk a bit fast so sometimes it's hard to keep up but also helps you learn faster. The grading is pretty straightforward except for the pronunciation exam which was a little bit harsher.
