As with everyone else, I also love Roman. What a friendly and sweet guy he is. In Fall of 2022 he had us do grammatik workbook exercises twice a week for practice, but many of us agreed that they weren't particularly helpful. He also seemed to indicate that he was considering changing this for future classes. One thing about Roman is that he doesn't believe in deadlines - which is nice because it reduces stress levels, but sometimes it can lead to work piling up later in the semester.

I want to preference this by saying: I absolutely love the German department and they're all so sweet and helpful. Viola, especially, is like the love of my life. She is extremely kind and chill. Although I greatly enjoy my German class, I would warn people: it is a lot of work. I do feel like it could be slower-paced without compromising the teaching, but the level of difficulty is to be expected of a Middlebury language class. I feel like I have learned a lot of German in the year that I've had taking it here, and can often get through basic conversations without much difficulty. There was always nightly homework, which I would say to count for about an hour-ish per night. Some nights less, some nights much more, especially if you're really trying to improve your German skills. The professors are usually pretty chill about homework though, and they give you 3 free extensions a semester, so long as you ask before the assignment is due. Depending on the circumstances, they are also likely to give you a few more if you ask before the deadline. This class requires you to be mentally present in every class, and you should expect to be cold-called. You usually are given 2 drafts of the essays we write, the first of which you'll get corrections on, and the second of which you'll be graded on. The class is pretty fast-paced, and there are tests and quizzes almost every week. These can be difficult, and be warned: they definitely count off for spelling mistakes. German language tables once a week are required (though if you miss one week, you can make up for it by going twice the next week) and a few extra events required throughout the rest of the semester. All in all, while it is a lot of work, I love this course and am planning to continue on with German. Were I to have had this class with a professor who was not as amazing as Viola, I might not have continued with my German learning, but I do not feel judged in her class when I make a mistake or simply do not know an answer.
