Thomas Preston

This course was incredibly interesting as a German course. I thoroughly enjoyed the unique films we watched. The classes consisted of casual conversations about the films and the themes within them. The essays were open topic and it was easy to choose the pieces of the course that you enjoyed and wanted to further evaluate.

The course content was very interesting but the students were all at really different levels in their German which made it hard to have a completely fulfilling learning experience. Overall, though, Preston was a high quality professor with a lot of passion for what he taught.

I loved this course - I had both Thomas Preston and Bettina as my teachers as my class had to be split in two (due to there being too many students). I found myself looking forward to coming to class as the material was interesting and both professors were enthusiastic. I would take this course again and highly recommend that students who took the first year of German continue. There are nightly grammar assignments, 4 essays, and 4 tests. Speaking in class is also a grade, but the teachers make sure that you participate by asking questions to the group. This course has great value as it covers present-day issues such as climate change. There are units also on immigration and family. This course is also a great review of the first year of German as it covers previously taught grammar as well as expanding on it.
