i thought i would love creative writing and that this class would imbue even more passion for writing in me. Karin is a lovely woman. clearly a passionate and caring individual. i love her. But frankly this class has neither given me worthwhile skills in creative writing and has actually made me LOSE my love for creative writing. I dont know if this completely personal or not but frankly the class was just so slowly paced and without any structure that i feel like i was just on an aimless raft at sea. But if that is good for your creativity then....whatever floats your boat.

Karin is a great professor and clearly very passionate about creative writing. Coursework was split between reading pieces of or about creative writing and discussing the techniques in class, writing our own pieces, and workshopping classmates' pieces. New pieces (or continuations of pieces) were due every week, with revisions due every other week, which can be a lot to keep up with if you're not feeling inspired. New pieces can be whatever you want, but you have to do at least one in each of the categories throughout the semester. Also every gets a piece of theirs workshopped to the whole class which is intimidating but the class environment is very welcoming and there's a large focus on the positive aspects of the piece instead of it being all critiques.

Professor Gotshall is absolutely amazing. She wants you to write about things that excite you, and assigns readings that provide genuine help for your own writing skills. She has you turn in a new piece every Monday. It can be as short as a quick poem or a several page prose piece - it's very flexible! On Wednesdays there are workshops to give classmates feedback on work.

Karin is a great professor, she is passionate about poetry and creative writing in general. The class is easy just has weekly writing which can get annoying, as well as weakly reading but they're not long.

I liked this class and Karin was a very kind, accommodating and supportive teacher. It wasn't a difficult class but I don't feel that I gained much from it. I would take it again because I enjoyed the workshop style.

I loved this course and it made me so excited to take more classes with this professor and in the creative writing department. There is a lot of creative freedom to write what is interesting and important to you. Grading isn't based on how "good" your piece is but the work and reflection you put into it. There are group workshops to talk about each piece you write, which is fun because you get feedback and also get to read and talk about other people's writing. In terms of workload and grading, it's an easy class but it definitely is what you make it and is so much more fun and meaningful the more you engage with the material and put effort into your own writing projects.
