This was such a great class. I would recommend it to anyone, regardless of whether they have taken a creative writing course before or are interested in majoring in it. Spring is so great at creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their work and finding their voice. We had multiple opportunities to be workshopped or otherwise receive feedback from our peers. I liked that there was not really a focus on grades, but there was always plenty of feedback. We spent a lot of time exploring what we believe nonfiction can be and how we understand truth in writing. It was really interesting to gain new perspectives on these ideas.

Professor Cohen has a ton of wisdom as a writer, and this workshop-style short fiction class was really enjoyable. It met at night, once a week so in terms of work per week, each week we would: read a short story by a published author and write a one page annotation on it, read two short stories submitted by classmates and annotate them - the workload felt manageable. In class each week, we would first discuss the short story by the published author before moving into workshop time where we would spend roughly 45 minutes providing feedback to the authors of each of the student stories. Since 2-3 students submit their work each week, throughout the class, I was consistently working on two short stories to submit. Each student signs up for two in class workshop slots at the start of the class, so I knew when my deadlines were to have my pieces ready for peer review in advance. The final is submitting those two stories and two additional stories (however the two additional stories could also be the two original pieces but heavily revised). Overall a good course. Be prepared to be workshopped by the whole class and get a lot of feedback. Professor Cohen's written feedback on each of my workshop drafts was always thoughtful and helpful. He pushed workshops to deeply question and engage with the pieces being reviewed each week.

Spring is such a gem to the school and even though I'm not a creative writing major I feel like I got so much out of this course and am looking forward to possibly taking more with her. She deeply cares about the work and her students - there is something to get out of the course even if you don't see yourself as a creative writer.
