Environmental Lit Workshop
Environmental Lit Workshop: Environmentalist Literature and Action Some would say we live in supremely disturbing times. A pandemic; the sixth extinction; fascism within democracies and militant nationalisms; climate apartheid, and a political economy based around the commodification and exploitation of people and the earth. In this course careful reading and analysis is paired with literary conversation and action. Course readings represent a wide array of environmental justice in differing genres. While we respond to assigned texts, we will simultaneously write our way toward an environmental literature of our own design.
This was such an amazing course. It was as difficult as you wanted it to be... I put effort into my creative writing pieces and got a lot more out of the class because of it but it was not a challenging class. The books we read were really interesting and it really expanded my understanding of what could count as environmental writing. I love Spring so much and I can't wait to take a course with her again in the future.

Spring is an absolutely wonderful professor, she cares deeply about each of her students and prioritizes our mental and emotional health over anything. The only significant assignments are some open-ended papers that you can kinda write about anything. The class is very easy and relaxed, and the real highlight of the class is Spring herself.
This was my favorite class I have taken at Midd. It made me fall in love with writing again and fostered a strong class community! The reading assignments end early in the semester and projects are very open-ended allowing for creativity.
I loved this course. The professor was very passionate and engaging - I was always intrigued during class. The work outside of class wasn't too demanding and always felt very worthwhile. I highly recommend.
Spring is the best, very real and understanding as a professor, person and mentor. Things were a little open ended but the readings were all very great. We ended up co-writing a sort of collective story, which was interesting.
Some writing assignments and must share with the whole class, but they aren’t graded, you just get feedback. The class starts out with just readings. She’s a great super interested and caring professor.
