Continued Beginning Chinese
Beginning Chinese An intensive continuation of CHNS 0101, this course is required of those wishing to take CHNS 0103 in the spring. Students may anticipate learning a significant amount of new vocabulary, sentence patterns and idiomatic expressions. Skits, oral presentations, writing assignments, and cultural activities are also part of this course.
If you are passionate to continue learning Chinese, then this course is for you. 102 in J-term is an amazing intense class with lots of activities to practice, speak and use the language in different ways. There will be a lot of grammar to learn and if you want to have success in the class, then you have to put a lot of effort into it. Professors are great and will be there to support you if you also contribute your part. I would like to note that if you felt like 101 Chinese was horrible and you were near to drop it. Then I would suggest you to not take it since it can be overwhelming, however NOT IMPOSSIBLE. Make sure you review what you learned in 101 so you do well in 102.

Chinese 102 was one of the most intense classes I took at middlebury. If you’re on the brink of dropping chinese after takibg 101, then dont take 102 — way more intense. However, while this class was tough with 2-4 quizzes a week and a test weekly, i dont regret taking it as I am now an upperclassman and can speak chinese relatively well. It all comes down to whether you want to know chinese or not. If you do: get ready for an intense j-term, if you don't save yourself the trouble.

honestly I think everyone knows this is a super hard class. its endless work and so much homework and exams and surprise quizzes, presentations, drill work etc - BUT if you like chinese, and put in the work, you will come out of the winter term so much more proficient in the language you will shock yourself - its one of those classes that pays of in the long run. Chinese Department unironically the most supportive department at middlebury no complaints there at all
