Shawna Shapiro
This course was fairly easy with digestible weekly readings, two open-note quizzes and three projects. Prof Shapiro is very enthusiastic about the topic but at times class can feel a little rushed and her organization was sometimes a bit chaotic. That being said she's very accommodating to different needs/extensions. Interesting class to take if you're looking for an easy elective or something to count towards Linguistics major/minor.

It is very clear that Shawna wants you to succeed. She is very available to help, loves teaching and also learning from students! The class is very discussion based and often involves lots of personal examples. The class was very fluid and unstructured but with 3 big projects & opportunities to explore sociolinguistics within your own interests.
This class will definitely help you improve your writing skills, thanks to peer editing and good feedback from the professor. Class consisted of mainly discussions about the readings, which became a bit repetitive. Additionally, many class meetings lacked structure or prior planning so at times we did not cover much material during class.
