I took Writing and Power with Professor Shapiro during my first semester at midd. The class was built to give students skills in the three major styles of writing that students often have to write papers in, so we wrote three papers in total throughout the semester. The professor was extremely encouraging and understanding. The pace was very reasonable although I recommend finishing one paper before moving onto the next so that they do not overlap too much. The readings were not too long and very applicable, and it was really nice to write about topics that were important to me. This is a great foundational course as an introduction to college-level writing.

I really enjoyed this course for what it was. I wouldn't take it again, but that's because I felt like I learned what I needed. Prof Shapiro is a very energetic professor, and she was very helpful with ensuring that all students felt supported and capable of completing the essays and work.
This class was not with Melissa Hammerle, it was with Kathleen Skubakowski. Her course was great, I feel like I became a much better writer. The course had a great reading list. I wish there a bit more of a connection between the education studies component, but overall it was still a great class. Prof Skubakowski was a pretty chill grader, as long as you turn in all the drafts.
