I took this course originally because it was recommended by my first-year advisor. I have taken a course with Professor Shapiro before so I knew previously that she is an effective and enthusiastic lecturer, but the overall experience still exceeded my expectations. She introduced a lot of topics that are related to the theme but also pertains to real-life issues and events, which made the class a lot more engaging and lively. I would say the class is really informative and great for people interested in sociolinguistics and/or writing, and I would totally recommend it.

If you are looking for an easy, helpful CW class than this is a great option. There were three big papers and 6 1-page reflections, and all papers had revisions except for the final. Rather than traditional grading for each paper, they were based on completion of basic requirements. This made the class much less stressful and more focused on improving your writing rather than worrying about a grade.

Shawna Shapiro is one of the most understanding and empathetic professors I have had at Middlebury. She genuinely wants her students to succeed in her classes. I took this class for my CW credit and the workload was manageable.
