Spring Production Studio: Des
Spring Production Studio: Design In preparing two fully produced theatrical productions for the stage, students will participate in and be exposed to professional production practices in all areas of theatrical design, including sets, costumes, props, lights, and sound. Students will be involved in planning, building, painting, constructing, and running and striking of shows. More advanced students may speak to the professors about taking on special projects, but those with little or no experience backstage are very much encouraged to participate. 8 hrs. lab
This class was technically taught by Mark Evancho but was for the most part actually taught by Jeremy, and, depending on the project, Jim, Mark, or Tony. The structure of class was very different from others I've taken. Twice a week you would show up from 1:30 to 4:15 and work on whatever project they needed help with at that particular time. Sometimes that was building flats for the set, painting backdrops, making or modifying props (including working with the costume shop on a doll), addressing lights, or any number of different activities and projects. While you are allowed to leave right at 4:15 there were frequent offers to stay later in exchange for a better grade in certain areas. Occasionally Mark would show up and give quizzes but his grading was so lenient that you could easily pass these without having done the reading. All the instructors were very passionate about their work and seemed very excited to share it with new people. They were also very willing to explain (and in some cases re-explain) the process of whatever they were asking us to do, and were always open to questions.

Please be aware that it is a much longer "class" than most classes at Middlebury. In fact, it shouldn't be called a class but an apprenticeship. Because you learn a lot of skills fairly quickly, such as carpentry, lighting, painting, and audio design. Also, a large part of the course is safety. Do keep in mind that you will be somewhat expected to help support the theater department's productions, so that adds a few hours during run-week. Mark and the rest of the instructors are super passionate about their work!!!

Although Mark Evancho spearheaded the grading part of this course, most of my learning came from Jim, Allison, and Tony. I learned so much about safety in a shop, hammering and drilling, design and the design process in making sure that sets are safe for all of the cast as well as the crew of a show. We learned about lighting and sewing and how you might decide between different materials. Every day, I learned something new in this class that I remember and will still remember when I need to be able to apply these skills in my personal life! I had a great time in Studio Production, and would highly recommend to anyone interested in being a bit handy, or even a mild interest in the performing arts.
