Visual Creativity for Stage
Visual Creativity for Stage Students will develop an understanding of color, line, form, shape, texture, and balance as they apply to historical and current theatrical literature. Projects in figure drawing, charcoal and chalk, watercolor painting, and model making are intended to stretch the student's research ability, artistic imagination, critical-analysis, and presentation skills. The class is designed for all students interested in the visual and the performing arts and serves as an introduction to set, costume, and light design. 25 hours of production lab work will be assigned in class.
As someone who went into this course with nearly zero artistic talent, let me say this was a great experience. Mark is a fantastic instructor and really seems to care about his students. You spend the first few weeks learning some basic drawing techniques and the remainder utilizing those techniques to make some really great pieces. Even if you have never even attempted to draw something, trust me when I say you can do it, and this course will allow you the foundation to create like you never have before. I am surprised with myself, and that seems to be a common theme throughout the classroom. There are a fairly hefty number of projects, but they are definitely manageable with a bit of effort. Overall, take this course. It's super fun, and Mark is great, even if you don't have any plans of going into theater or have barely even picked up a pencil to draw before.

I really enjoyed this course. If you aren't into art don't take it. Mark is so nice and you do most work in class but have to finish projects over the weekend. It's really relaxing and a great class to take if you need an art credit. 2 lab sessions required but they fly by.
This is a great class for anybody intending to major or minor in a creative area of study. You learn a little bit about visual art, theater, and writing, and you work on some creative projects of different types. Mark is a very kind professor, and I enjoyed the class!
Mark is a kind professor and very willing to help. You spend a lot of time learning to sketch in this class and drawing objects and things around campus such as corridors. So more experienced artists may be a bit bored. The lab hours are fun!
Mark can be a bit rambly, but otherwise super friendly. The class focuses primarily on intro drawing skills, with only a minor focus on actual theatre (not counting the actual theatre lab hours you need to do). The work is generally easy.
