The readings were sometimes a little dense and hard to grasp. However, Spackman never failed to thoroughly unpack the texts through the use of helpful PowerPoint. In addition, Spackman makes time during class to encourage exciting class discussion. We had two 6-8 page essays about required readings during the semester, but you have lots of flexibility on the topic. For the final, you have a 6-8 page final research paper on a topic of your choice where you bring in outside readings. Also, on a side note, Spackman is just a super nice guy who wants his students to succeed and makes himself very available to meet with him.

Professor Viner is very understanding -- super willing to give students grace and he had the most clear evaluation standards I have ever seen. One thing to be aware of is that more than three unexcused absences will lead to a deduction in grade (first a step, i.e. A -> A-, then down a full letter grade i.e. A -> B). I didn't love a lecture format for a philosophy class but he made it very approachable, and I think I just don't like putting human rights in a philosophical framework.

I really enjoyed this class with Professor Woodruff, she was extremely accomodating and helpful throughout the semester. Readings were also carefully selected and instructions on expectations of class were fairly clear. If you enjoy philosophy I think this course is a good place to start.
