How to Improvise
How to Improvise Have you ever watched a friend while they jam away on their guitar, awed that they can make things up on the spot? This is called improvisation. Perhaps you would like to learn how to improvise. In this course we will learn how to best express what we hear and see in an improvised performance. We will discuss strategies for making the prospect of extemporaneous performance less daunting for a novice. Students will also learn about the foundational influence Black musicians have on the US American improvisational tradition through the study of the philosophies of such artists as Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, and George Lewis.

Professor Taylor has a very unique perspective on music and music theory that I think is valuable to people of all levels of experience. The workload in the course is very manageable and class, although it can seem long sometimes, is engaging and thought-provoking. If you are looking for a traditional music class, this is not it, but it is valuable nonetheless.
How to Improvise with Prof Taylor was a fun and easy class. We only met once a week and pretty much our only assignments were solo improvisations with quick reflections. Prof Taylor is a really cool guy and exposes you to many different types of music and tries to reframe what you consider music. Each class consists of a listening portion, discussion, then class/group jams. Definitely made for those who already play an instrument, but there were also students who didn't play an instrument in the class. Would recommend if you're looking for a class with a lighter workload and are willing to get out of your comfort zone playing your instrument.
