Genocides Throughout History
Genocides Throughout History With the devastation of the Holocaust and other more recent events, the study of genocide has mainly focused on the modern period. Yet, mass killings and other atrocities abound in earlier centuries as well. In this course we will focus on examples across time and space to gain a more comprehensive understanding of such phenomena. We will consider the very meaning of “genocide” as well as the suitability of other terms. We will also discuss different explanations of everything from perpetrators’ motivations to victims’ responses. Finally, we will examine the possibility of preventing genocides.
I am not a History major or minor, and I wanted to take this course because it knocked off a requirement, but also to fill my schedule. This ended up being one of my favorite classes so far. I believe the professor does a really good job of teaching such horrific tragedies in an informative and interesting way. This class does require you to read a lot, and the class is based on discussion. Sometimes she will lecture, but most of the time you will discuss all that you have read in class. It is important that you read everything because most of it comes up, and if you don't, you will be lost in the discussion. The professor also expects you to contribute to the discussion and not be the only person who never speaks in class. Overall, I enjoyed this class, and it was informative and triggered new ways of defining mass atrocities.

My second class taken with Professor Bennette. She is a great lecturer and clearly very smart. Her tests/quizzes are fair and the class is mostly discussion based. The readings can be long and dense, but that is the only real homework we had.
