American Revolutions –Reacting
American Revolutions: Reacting to the Past In this course we will be examining three moments of intellectual and cultural conflict in the United States, which will likely include 1) The Revolution in NYC, 1775-76, 2) Greenwich Village, 1913 (Suffrage, Labor and the New Woman) and, 3) Chicago, 1968. We will dive deep into these revolutionary moments via Reacting to the Past games, in which you will present the perspectives of historical characters—sometimes with values quite different than your own--in lively debate. These games do not have a fixed script: you’ll find yourself researching historic documents, collaborating, making public speeches, plotting—and in the end, perhaps even rewriting history.

I took this course in 24fall. This course is extremely interesting as you get to play characters from different periods in history. It requires a decent amount of reading, writing, and public speaking but once you get the hold of it it's actually very enjoyable. We get to interact with our peers a lot and it was definitely a unique course. I'm pretty sure most people enjoyed it a lot. I would recommend it to anyone wishing to try something new and engaging.

This is the type of class that you'll want to put in as much effort as you can. It's fun, evocative and not a class where you'll find yourself falling asleep in. The class is heavily based in speeches and you'll find yourself doing not a ton of reading but a good amount of it. The semester is split up into several games, each in distinct historical periods that shape the way that you play. I would highly recommend this FYS to the passionate orator and those who like to play devil's advocate in debates and arguments.

I absolutely loved this course. At the beginning I was not sure about the whole reacting concept but looking at this experience as a whole it was one of my favorite classes. The professor was amazing and made the whole class such a welcoming space.
Professor Deb is fantastic. Was unsure of the "reacting games" format in a class setting, but it has been an amazing experience. She runs game sessions which are really fun and there is a lot of class bonding. However much you put in is what you'll get out of it. You get really invested in the class because it is engaging and fun. The classes are fast paced because a lot happens within them. Professor Deb is understanding and a great pre-advisor. I would love to take a class with her again.

Professor Evans was a wonderful FYS teacher. She was kind and passionate and the class format was unique. I came to class excited to participate each class and was engaged throughout. You will have to write papers and give speeches, however, the course material is interesting and lends itself to enjoyable work outside of class. There is a lot of collaboration with peers. I highly recommend this class!

This class is absolutely incredible. It is a very unique style of teaching since it is entirely "reacting" games (basically roleplaying during various historical events). There is a solid amount of reading involved and you write about five papers, but it was all very interesting and engaging. You kind of have to always be "on" during class though since it gets very intense at times, but it is always a blast and you get to know everyone very well.
