Global Environmental Racism
Literary and Filmic Protest of Environmental Racism Can Literature and Film Save the Planet? This course focuses on literary and filmic responses to environmental racism. Bearing witness to those whose lives are most endangered, we will learn about environmental justice, economics, migration, globalization, and the anthropology of climate change through comparative study of works authored by Iraqi, Chinese, and African Americans, as well as by indigenous Latin Americans (Andean, Xavante, and Wayuu), Native Americans (Navajo and Sioux), Africans (Ogoni), Indians (Dalit and Adivasi), and Armenians. We will write literature and film reviews, and work incrementally toward the realization of activist essays.

Spring was super understanding of my disability needs. The course was mostly chill whole-group discussion. We went over a novel, a poetry book, a video game and some documentary content as well as one or two smaller optional readings that were handed out. We wrote two papers, presented a whole-class project at the end of the term, and wrote a reflection for the final. It was clear that Spring was well-read and passionate about environmental racism and the content I learned felt super worthwhile.

Spring's teaching style is very unique in the sense that she doesn't follow the typical academic style of teaching and she allows the class to control what they want to learn and accomplish. I would recommend this class and any of her courses if you love experimental learning and want to learn more about environmental issues around the world.
Professor Spring is very engaging and clearly loves what she teaches. She is very interested in what her students have to say and appreciative of all perspectives--even if they do not align with her own. I loved her as a professor and would take another class with her in the future!
Spring is the most loving and passionate professor I've ever encountered. Her discussion-based classes are truly interesting and enjoyable, and they feel like a safe space to share thoughts, struggles and opinions. The readings are crude and expose a reality about Environmental Racism that I have never read about before. I would highly recommend taking this class.
This was the FYSE that was assigned to me as a first year and I wouldn't have traded it for anything! This course opened up my world to many problems that are going on around globally that are of high importance but hardly ever get talked about. Professor Spring is an amazing person and professor!
Spring is an amazing teacher and a great person, I thoroughly enjoyed sitting in her class and listening to her talk, can tell she is very well informed and calculated. The summer reading book was very long but the rest of the reading was not too bad.
