Folk Fairy Tales of the World
Once Upon a Time – Folk Fairy Tales of the World Tell me a story! We will examine the complex, inter-connected folk fairy tale traditions found in every society. Comparing fairy tale variants from around the world, we will explore their convoluted and fertile relationships as observed in the rise of fairytale collections in 15th Century Europe, reaching a culmination in the Brothers Grimm collection, often synonymous with the fairy tale itself. To attain a more dispassionate critical stance we will explore theoretical approaches to the fairy tales by such authers as Jack Zipes, Ruth Bottigheimer, Maria Tatar, and Kay Stone, and conclude by examining modern variants in prose, poetry, and film.

While this class initially seemed quite interesting, the course content and literature was not as engaging as I thought it would be. Professor Russi was a fun and engaging professor but the criteria and expectations for assignments was not very clear and oftentimes the assignment would receive contrarian feedback. Other than this Professor Russi made the class discussions to the best of his ability but sometimes the discussions would still be slightly boring and stagnant as most of the analysis was already provided in the books we are provided with. Finally the content is very Euro-Centric and could do with being broadened to a more global reach.

This class was a super fun look into the surprisingly complex and often grisly world of Fairy Tales. Readings were pretty easy, but you were expected to know the details of a different tales plot point - by plot point. The papers covered a breadth of writing styles from précis to review to creative writing and culminated in a research paper. There was a high-ish volume of work but prof. Russi was super accommodating with deadlines, and every paper and project was sourced from a different discipline. This was a great introduction to college and the liberal arts.

Professor Russi is very passionate about fairy tales. The lectures can be boring, but he tries to lighten the mood. The stories are overall interesting. He is an easy grader for reader responses, but not for papers.
Roger is a delight. He's super sweet and is very fun to take class with. The class content is fascinating, but readings can be quite dull, and class discussion depth doesn't justify how long they are. It can be a bit slow paced at times, and some lectures can drag but overall the material and Roger himself elevate the class for me.
Professor Russi truly seems enthusiastic about this class and its material. The class in itself isn't difficult just sometimes a bore to get through. The readings can sometimes be interesting but other times I'm falling asleep. He is also super picky about papers and peoples writing. He's a harsh grader and will absolutely humble you with his feedback. He is super nice and welcoming in class, but the discussions can be quite slow and exhausting.

I personally would not take this class again simply because of the material itself. I felt like taking a course about fairy tales can make you take off the rose-colored glasses about Disney or your childhood. However, this professor is extremely accommodating. He truly has passion for the work that he does and his students and learning about fairy tales is amazing as long as you know you'll never really be able to view certain animated films or fairytales the same again.
