Light: Metaphors & Models
Metaphors, Models, and Measurement of Light We perceive, imagine, explain, produce, use, measure, absorb, and even slow down light. It is pervasive in our human experience and our scientific understanding of the universe. Represented in all kinds of ways, from discrete measurements to evocative metaphors, light appears in literature, in science, and in our daily lives, and we will use each of these contexts as a lens for critical thinking. We will employ methods from the humanities and from the sciences to explore concepts of light in fiction, poetry, essays, and scientific writing, and we will incorporate our own observations and experimental activities into our consideration of this material.

Professor Goodsell is one of the most kind-hearted people I have met during my time here at Middlebury, and I am so grateful to have her as one of my professors. She is clearly very passionate in what she is teaching. The content of the class itself is very interesting, as it is a great mix between literature and physics. It is also important to note that you will be just fine with no prior knowledge in physics in this class.

Professor Goodsell is so sweet and caring. She brings us food everyday since our class is during lunchtime, which is insanely generous. She is very open to everyones ideas and gives a lot of freedom in our essays to chose what we want to focus on.
