Civil War & Civil Rights
Civil War & Civil Rights In a time of national emergency, the rules governing everyday life often get suspended to meet a more pressing need. What rights of citizens remain protected in these circumstances, and what liberties are vulnerable to erosion? Where are the boundaries of reasonable sacrifice? While these questions are applicable to every era, we will focus on the years of the American Civil War (the 1860s) to explore them most fully. We will use the thoughts of 19th-century Americans and Confederates and the arguments of historians as our guide towards deep thinking and discussion about rights, liberties, individual responsibility, and community cohesion.

This was a good class to have in my first semester. The workload was pretty lights, and Professor Morsman was very open to feedback about the assignments and the readings. She made a lot of the work feel less daunting, such as the final symposium presentation. It ended up being a great class, and it was nice to have a class that was not too much work for my first semester. Also, Professor Morsman goes above and beyond to make sure her advisees know whats going on, are meeting people, and are doing alright. Because of the style of the class, you get to know your peers pretty well.

Great Class. Really love this class. It was my least choice for FYSE at first but ended up becoming the best class this year. Unparallel experience to have. The group project at the end was interesting, the essay was not boring, small workload, and great reading. Definitely recommend it, regardless of your pre-knowledge in history.
Professor Morsman is fantastic. She's really easy to talk to and wants everyone to succeed in the class, so she works to accommodate everyone's needs. The group project for the end of the semester was a lot of work, but we got to do interesting topics that made it worth it.
This was my first-year seminar. I'm not a history person, but Professor Morsman made it relevant to today's issues. The first half of the semester was reading heavy and the second half was project-based. I learned a lot about the material, but most of what I got out of the class were skills related to reading, writing, group work, time management, and oral presentation. The professor dedicated a lot of class time to bringing in outside presenters to learn life skills!

Really enjoyed the class. Thought the content was very interesting. Professor Morsman gave us very interesting assignments with a good mix of group work. For many of the assignments, she let the students pick the area of focus too.
