Amy Morsman
Professor Morsman is very nice and the course is decently easy, but the big issue is this course is way to simplistic. There is no military history, the Reconstruction aspect is focused on for maybe a week and even the content we review is a bit too lacking. Now Morsman is a good teacher and when we are in lectures the course is interesting and the Civil War is immensely fascinating however, in many ways this course feels way to much like an English course. We mostly read novels that are the real focus of the discussion rather than the history we learned in class and for the quizzes half the quizzes are based off of the reading. If you are fine with the reading aspect then this class is worth it if not then maybe do not take the class. Overall, I would slightly recommend the course and it being easy is a big bonus, but there are certainly some problems that I wish were fixed in the future.

This class felt very 'high school.' The course is largely graded on bi-weekly quizzes and participation. I felt that I learnt very little compared to other history classes. Most readings came from historically set novels, rather than papers or non-fiction works. Deadlines were often changed at the last moment, and I had less time than anticipated for the final group project. Whilst Prof. Morsman is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the Civil War, this often led to lectures running over time, or being missed due to going off on tangents or getting off-topic. I would be hesitant to recommend this class to anyone not interested in this period of history or people who do not want to major in history.

This course had a weekly discussion, for which we frequently had a lot of reading (up to 300+ pages). The actual lectures were somewhat hard to follow. We were definitely babied in the group projects, which left little time for actual lecture. There is a strong emphasis on participation, which she grades fairly harshly. Quizzes every other week were easy with options for extra credit throughout the semester.
