Lyme Disease
Lyme Disease Lyme disease is fascinating from medical, public health, and ecological perspectives. In this seminar we will explore the disease in an interdisciplinary fashion. We will look at the history of—and controversy around—its diagnosis, treatment, and control. Because Lyme has a tick vector and animal reservoirs, we will consider how the local environment affects it. Connections to other zoonotic diseases (SARS, West Nile, EEE) will be made. Readings will come from Bull's Eye: Unraveling the Medical Mystery of Lyme Disease by Eldow, Lyme Disease: The Ecology of a Complex System by Ostfeld, and primary sources.
This is a great first-year seminar. The course was very interesting while chill at the same time. The course consisted of 5 paper (1 being optional) and participation. Before each class their was readings required which were later discussed. The papers were sometimes long but David is a very easy grader. He never cold called or put pressure on people to speak. I think everyone ended with at least an A- in the class.

Dave was super chill, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning in-depth about Lyme disease. It was a very low-stakes and relaxed class with a fair amount of work, but easy grading. Definitely one of the best FYSE classes offered, and I would recommend it!
This class was a great first year seminar! The topic was interesting but not overly complicated. Dave is a great teacher, easy grader and very accommodating to student needs. Most classes are discussion based, but he never cold calls and is very kind.
Prof. Allen is very understanding and a very easy grader. However, Lyme Disease was pretty boring... Every day we did the same thing: read about lyme disease for homework, and discuss lyme disease in class. If you're looking for an easy freshman seminar, this one is a great choice, but be prepared to be bored.
