Navigating our Toxic World Have you ever wondered how the environment around you shapes your health? In this course, we will learn how environmental health scientists study the often surprising ways that water, air, food, and the built environment affect wellbeing. For instance, we will answer questions such as what is in “BPA Free” water bottles, are organic foods actually better, and what is the science—and politics—behind your waterproof raincoat and mascara? We will also explore themes of environmental justice because who you are and where you live determine your environment and, in turn, your health. Through research and critical analysis of primary and secondary sources, we will challenge common myths and reveal complex truths behind environmental health connections in our daily lives.

Professor Crawford is definitely passionate about these topics but failed to communicate lectures in a super interesting way. Also frequently asked the class questions and then interrupted not allowing anyone to answer, but also seemed to have concerns that we weren't participating enough. The class culture was pretty quiet and not super engaged and the homework often felt like busy work.

This class was relatively easy and I recommend it to anyone interested in learning about toxic chemicals. Professor Crawford is very kind and accommodating to people's needs. Throughout the semester you will write three papers, which aren't too difficult, but you will need to do some researching in order to be successful for the last two. I certainly learned a lot about the toxins that people are exposed to everyday, and professor Crawford is very passionate about the things she teaches.
