History and the Graphic Novel
History, Representation, and the Graphic Novel In this course we will read several graphic novels dealing with historical atrocities in the non-Western and Western context during the early modern and modern periods. In particular, we will examine many of the ongoing central issues in atrocity and genocide studies as well as in the historical field more generally regarding inclusivity, representation, accessibility, and accuracy. The growing concern over the gap between academic history and the “real world” will also be examined. Students will gain increased knowledge about historical injustices as well as their integral connection to and impact upon the present. This course is part of the Public Humanities Labs Initiative administered by the Axinn Center for the Humanities./

Professor Bennette is super nice and a great person to be around. The material in this seminar is interesting and something you'd rarely find in other history classes. It is highly discussion and project-based, which is fine as long as you put in the effort.
Prof. Bennette is an amazing prof and great with discussions. Very engaging, but don't bother taking this class if you don't like writing long papers. Discussions are every class, so if you didn't finish a reading -- it will show. Her essay prompts are very general and not a lot of guidance is given, but that is a good introduction to college writing and it makes you a better writer. Her office hours are helpful, and her comments on your essay will read like an English teacher, but it will be extremely valuable and helpful.

This course has a good balance of writing assignments, projects, and discussions. Professor Bennette is all around a really great professor, very qualified in her field and good at facilitating discussions. The coursework in this class includes assigned readings, occasional essays, and the main group project of creating a section of a graphic novel based on an atrocity of your choice. Overall, if you are interested in learning about history and how it can be expressed effectively in various mediums, this would be a good course for you.

She is an overall great professor, but the class gets extremely repetitive and boring. The readings are manageable and the one big project can be difficult and time-consuming. The grading is very fair.
