Models Contemplative Education
Models for Contemplative Education: Mindful Inquiry and Learning Contemplative education refers to a form of pedagogy that identifies the principles of embodied, mindful learning as integral to deep, engaged meaning-making. The field of contemplative studies informs this work, as educators develop new models of teaching that use critical first-person inquiry and mindfulness practices to foster sustained engagement. In this course we will explore the field of contemplative education and consider such questions as: what is learning and how does divergent or mindful thinking influence how we learn? Is there a connection between mindfulness and creativity, attention, memory? We will review research in the field and critically examine findings that suggest a correlation between contemplative practices and the intellectual growth and psychological well-being of students.

Professor Hammerle is very enthusiastic and engaging in this class which is contagious. This course, like most First Year Seminars, was very writing intensive. As a result, I would highly recommend staying on top of your assignments and planning ahead at the beginning of the semester. Professor Hammerle helps students understand mindfulness in the context of pedagogy as well as other aspects of life. With that being said, a lot of the mindfulness vocabulary can become repetitive and the readings seem to be similar in their nature.

As an incoming freshman I valued Prof. Hammerle's class and her effort to accommodate to her students. She really cared about her students and the course helped me integrate into college easier than I would have. I found the class's content and structure beneficial and it was a good way to get exposure to doing presentations and participating in class. Her activities and assignments were all centered about mindfulness which really helps as a student transitioning from high school to college.

Prof. Hammerle is so sweet and really did her best to make everyone feel at home. She has a very warming presence. She is extremely gracious with students in terms of extensions on papers. There is some reading, but the overarching points stay the same between each reading so it is advisable to skim. She is so kind, I wish she could teach all my classes.
She is such a great instructor; I would love to take another course with her. The amount of compassion she shows to the students is contagious and she always makes me leave the class with a smile. I highly recommend this course, as an incoming freshman.
