Bayeux Tapestry
Models, Contexts, and Afterlives of the Bayeux Tapestry In this course we will look closely at the late eleventh-century Bayeux Tapestry (also known as the Bayeux Embroidery), examining its historical and literary sources, the details of its creation, and its reverberations throughout the arts of the medieval and modern eras. We will also consider how this embroidered textile entangled its medieval and modern viewers in the stories it tells and those it avoids. We will discover that it can tell us much about attitudes toward gender and masculinity, the taming of the natural world, and the terrors of war. Hands-on assignments will familiarize us with some of the techniques and materials used to create this monument of medieval European Art History.

I took this class because I wanted a first-year advisor who was knowledgeable about the school, and Garrison offered exceptional advising in my course selection process. This class definitely prepared me for college writing, and it involves more writing and reading than the other Feb FYS. There were three 6 page papers distributed throughout the semester, and she hands the assignments out a month in advance, so there was rarely a time where I didn't have a paper to be working on, but I also was able to spread out my writing process over several weeks. She is very available and eager to meet one-on-one as a general advisor or for the class. She is very passionate about the Bayeux tapestry, but unfortunately, I struggled to feel engaged with the subject because I'm not particularly interested in medieval art history.

Bayeux Tapestry was my first year seminar and while have very little interest in the topic, Prof Garrison made the class enjoyable. She is very passionate and dedicated to her work and her students. There is a good amount of reading and writing but not too much more than any other class I am in. I am very lucky to have her as an advisor. If you are into art history I definitely recommend taking a class with her.
