Eliza Garrison
Court, Castle and Cathedral is a really interesting survey of Gothic architecture and art, and High and Late medieval art in general. Do note it is pretty much solely focused on religious art - it's really more of Cathedral, Cathedral and Cathedral. The class is very reading-heavy and the readings are pretty necessary, but there are no formal exams.
Prof Garrison is very knowledgable about Medieval architecture and there is so much fascinating content to learn on this subject that you don't be bored. But sometimes the course dives too deep into niche scholarship rather than the art/architecture and history itself. Assignments were manageable and graded fairly.
This is a great class for those interested in the more architectural side of art history. You learn a ton about gothic architecture (mostly in germany and france) and also brush up on your christian iconography. Garrison is such an enthusiastic professor and brings a lot of fun energy to each class. Her lectures are great (if sometimes a bit disorganized). There can be a lot of readings per class, but other than that the class is not super difficult. Garrison does have high expectations for written work and can be a tough grader, but I think the class is totally worth it!
