Fascinating Rhythm
Fascinating Rhythm: Rhythmic Analysis Swing, groove, pocket, grid…these and many other terms like them are used to describe the musical element known as rhythm. Though often deemphasized in musical criticism and analysis in relation to pitch/melody, rhythm is inextricable from the musical experience. In this course we will discuss the underrated but undeniable importance of rhythm in the music to which we love to dance, study, or exercise. Through journaling, analysis, performance, and listening, students will develop tools to describe rhythm with greater nuance and depth. Though music from all cultures will be welcomed, the primary focus will be music influenced by the African Diaspora. Open to all musicians and enthusiasts alike.

At first I was very skeptical about this class as I wasn't particularly excited to learn about rhythm but as the class progress I found myself engrossed in the material. The professor was extremely chill and had an infectious enthusiasm for the content that I didn't expect but ended up enjoying regardless. After the class, I feel like I listen to music very differently. I became a more active listener which has allowed me to enjoy music a lot more.

Professor Taylor is an incredibly smart and relaxed professor. Almost no work for this class, we basically just listened to music for the class periods and talked about it. We had to write some reflections throughout that weren't too hard, and the final group project was actually pretty fun. I learned loads and was excited for every class, and I definitely gained a lot from the class.

I really liked this class. It was my FYS and it was very laid back. I rarely had homework and it was like one journal entry every other week. Prof. Taylor is a great musician and one of the chillest instructors I've ever had. We literally just listen to music for an hour and fifteen minutes and talk about it. He's also a very easy grader. Highly recommend taking this if you want an easy care free class
