Animals in Literature
Animals in Literature and Culture Animals, wrote anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss, are good to think with. They are good to write with as well; almost all works of literature include animals, their importance varying from the merely peripheral to the absolutely central. Among other narrative functions, animals serve as essential metaphors for understanding the human animal. In this course we will read a wide variety of fiction, poetry, children's literature, philosophy, science, history, and cultural theory from Ancient Greek sources (in translation) to the present. We will consider theoretical, ethical, religious, psychological, linguistic, and political issues pertaining to animals and their representation in literary texts. lect./disc.

this was a really easy course, with not many weekly readings. the only downside was the course was at a very early hour, but the professor had so much enthusiasm it was contagious. everyone should take this, especially those that need a distribution requirement!
I love this class. You get as much out of it as you put in. Professor Losano is very kind and passionate about what she is teaching. You should definitely take if you're on the fence! The readings are not too long, and you can find summaries online for some of the longer ones, as they are not too obscure. I have really enjoyed all of the discussions we have in this class.
Such an easy class. Professor Lozano really is a passionate professor. Definitely take this class if you can and want an easy, low-stress class. You can get by in this class without doing a lot of work and just participating in the discussions. Essays are short and easy.
Professor Losano was a great lecturer and passionate about the course material, making the class enjoyable even at 8 am. Though there was constant reading, many of the novels and stories we read were fun to read, which was a nice contrast to some of my other classes. BIG class, so whole class discussions were hard for some people, but smaller group discussions were nice.
