Victoria's Secrets
Victoria's Secrets Known as the great age of the realist novel and the epitome of staid decorum, the nineteenth century also had its guilty pleasures--mysteries, ghost stories, science fiction, adventure tales, and more--which exposed a radical underside to the Victorian imagination where norms of gendered, racial, and ethnic identity were called into question. In this course we will read both canonical realist novels and their non-traditional counterparts in an attempt to understand the productive interplay between these two seemingly disparate literary traditions. Authors may include: Austen, Dickens, Eliot, Hardy, the Brontës, Wilkie Collins, R.L. Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, H.G. Wells, Bram Stoker, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and others.

Professor Losano is one of my favorite professors that I've had at Middlebury. She is extremely knowledgeable about all things Victorian and ensures that she covers all aspects of a novel, including important time-period context. She promotes discussions in class that enable students to grasp the readings fully, and she is always willing to answer questions. I highly recommend taking this course specifically, but even taking any course with Professor Losano during your time at Middlebury.

While I took this course as I had been recommended it by a friend (and not because I am an english major), I found this class interesting and engaging. The works we read aren't difficult readings but very classic ones that college students should have read before, and as someone who had not read all of the assigned books, I found it engaging. Professor Losano is also very passionate and caring for her students.

Professor Losano is great and so nice. She is great at explaining material and doesn't have one clear, concrete answer that she is looking for in the context of class discussion. In this class, she put what we were reading in a larger historical framework, which I liked. In terms of workload, it was not bad. We had short reading quizzes once a week which kind of forced people to do the reading, although she said she was testing it out so not sure if she'll carry that over to other semesters. Very fair grader though and very easy to talk to.

I really enjoyed my experience with Professor Losano! Each week, we read a new Victorian era novella (up to ~100 pages). The books were actually pretty fun to read. Expect things like Alice in Wonderland, Christmas Carol, and Sherlock Holmes. On Mondays, the professor lectures about the book, and on Wednesdays we divide into small groups for discussions. These discussions are very chill, and the professor provides the questions to guide them. Outside work includes very short Canvas posts every week, where you write anything you want about the book, and then reply to two other posts. There are also very quick reading quizzes once a week, and two papers for the whole semester. The papers are each 3-4 pages. Professor Losano is extremely kind, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable about the Victorian era. I would highly recommend her and this class!

I loved Losano's teaching style and knowledge of the era. The readings were definitely intimidating but I have no regrets in taking this course. Losano does specify that she prefers hard copies of the stories, but you can definitely be fine with e-books and PDFs if purchasing physical copies is a barrier for you. The paper we wrote was just a close reading, which she was a little picky about (no intro, no conclusion, no summarizing the text, little things like that). Overall, I would reflect positively on my experience in this class and I recommend it to anyone interested in English.

If I could take a class with Professor Losano every semester until I graduate, I would. Professor Losano is simply the best professor at Middlebury College. She is so smart and knowledgeable. Her way of lecturing is so amazing, and her lectures are always interesting! She keeps me engaged the whole class. She never makes me feel stupid when I ask her questions. I hope not too many students discover how amazing she is, so I can guarantee a seat in her class.

Antonia is amazing. Her syllabus made it seem like she was going to be a tough grader, but that wasn't the case in my experience. The class was pretty chill (a short book a week, weekly discussion posts & short quizzes and just 2 short papers). I would definitely recommend this class.
The layout of the course is 1 book per week with one lecture and one discussion per week. Antonia is enthusiastic and so kind. Cannot recommend her enough. The reading can be a lot but the actually works are very interested and not super hard to get through.
