I liked this class. Lots of busy work but it was pretty easy. Students did lots of demo lessons in class to practice teaching skills. McVeigh is definitely passionate about TESOL but the class is a bit boring during the long lecture bits.

Culturally Relevant Pedagogies was one of the more grounding and practically meaningful education courses I’ve taken. The class pushed me to think beyond abstract theories of teaching and instead focus on how culture, identity, power, and lived experience actively shape learning environments. Readings and discussions challenged the idea of “neutral” pedagogy and made clear how curriculum design, classroom norms, and assessment practices can either affirm or marginalize students. What stood out most was how discussion-based and reflective the course was. It asked students to interrogate their own positionality while also engaging with real classroom scenarios and case studies. The course felt especially relevant in a Middlebury context, where conversations about diversity, inclusion, and access can sometimes feel theoretical. Overall, it was a thoughtful, intellectually demanding course that connected educational theory to real-world teaching practice and left me more attentive to what it actually means to teach responsibly and inclusively.

Methods and Issues to Writing is a thoughtful and engaging course that pushes students to think more critically about how and why we write. Rather than focusing only on mechanics, the class emphasizes argument, structure, and the social and ethical questions surrounding writing, which makes it especially valuable across disciplines. The readings are diverse and intentionally challenging, encouraging students to grapple with different styles, perspectives, and rhetorical strategies. Writing assignments build progressively and reward revision and reflection, helping students become more deliberate and self-aware writers. Class discussions are a major strength of the course, as they push students to articulate ideas clearly and respond thoughtfully to others’ arguments. That said, the workload can be demanding at times, particularly when multiple drafts and readings overlap. However, this intensity ultimately contributes to meaningful improvement in writing and critical thinking. Overall, Methods and Issues to Writing is a rewarding course for students who are willing to engage deeply with their writing process and think critically about the role of writing in academic and real-world contexts.
