Prof. Ngaiza is very passionate and enthusiastic, the discussions after the movie screenings were super interesting. Oftentimes the discussions started even before class time: right after the screening. The topics she chose were great as well, I learned a lot about Black movements and depiction of Black Americans in the cinema. The class is very chill overall, not much work at all.

This course was pretty chill and the main components were a short paper with a collage, a video project, artist collage, and a final short podcast.Along with reading reflections and in-class projects. Most of the assignments were pretty easy to do, but required a bit of effort in order to receive a good grade. Overall this was an enjoyable class.
I took this class without having taken a film class before, and this experience cemented within me a deeper appreciation for not only the strict content covered in film but primarily the form behind each shot: the lighting, cinematography, cuts and sounds. Professor Ngaiza assigned short reading responses each week, which allowed me to explore my personal relationship with each reading and deepen my creative writing skills. The bulk grade of the class was divided into creative group projects and a final individual project. For the group work, we created a film, made a movie poster and compiled a slide show. Individually, we had to create a collage and our own short image film. For me, this type of work felt very enriching and was more engaging than writing essays and doing heavy readings. I would recommend this class for anyone who wants to learn more about film, not just people who want to major in Black Studies.
