Foundations in Chemistry
Foundations of Chemistry CHEM 0102 is the foundational course required for all students beginning chemistry. In this course, we will introduce the essential vocabulary and symbolism used to describe matter, the chemical theories that relate microscopic structure and composition to macroscale physical properties, and the mathematical use of measurements and chemical equations to relate products and reactants (i.e., stoichiometry) in pure substances and solutions. We will use short lectures and small group work to solve problems collaboratively. During discussions, we will show demonstrations and apply theory to analyze observations. Students should visit go/chemplacement to determine if they are eligible to enroll directly into CHEM 0105.

Rick is an amazing Professor who clearly and deeply cares about each and every one of his students. He is extremely kind, passionate, approachable, and accommodating. It is clear that he cares personally about all of his students and that he wants everybody to do well. Regarding the course, the difficulty could go either way. For a chem course, this is extremely math-focused, and that is essentially all we did. If you are a math person - that is great and this will be a breeze. If not - well, if you spend time reviewing and doing some practice problems, you will do great. Conceptually, this course is very straightforward and simple. The class is lecture based and the readings are entirely independent. It is important to do the readings to understand the material in class as there are a lot of important things from the readings that are not discussed in depth in class. It can be easy to procrastinate studying as there is no homework, but doing the optional practice questions should be done regularly, in-place of homework time that you would usually have from a class. This course has weekly quizzes which will be difficult if you have not done a sufficient amount of studying beforehand - that is where the bulk of the work for this class comes from. If you study enough the quizzes and exams are straightforward. I would definitely recommend this course to people who are unsure on their chemistry abilities before taking 105 and/or haven't though about chem since freshman/sophomore year of HS.

Loved this course and Prof. Bunt! The readings are very clear. Provided me with all the necessary information to tackle general chemistry next semester as someone who took chemistry freshman year of HS. Prof. Bunt is a great teacher and a geniune person.
