The Digital Studio
CMD+Z: Infinite Possibilities of The Digital Studio In this foundation design course we will explore various aspects of design including 2D composition, color theory, image editing, and typography while developing literacy in graphics software using the Adobe Creative Suite. Focusing on the comparison of visual communication across global cultures, lectures and assignments will be centered around the ways design intersects with art and socio-political issues. Students will develop creative visual problem-solving and image-making skills that they can apply across many disciplines, learning to communicate and present their ideas effectively. Students will produce two substantial screen-based and print projects over the course of the semester. It is a 100 level beginning level class open to and designed for students with no visual artmaking experience. This course will count as a prerequisite towards 300-level courses in The Program In Studio Art.

This course certainly equipped me with various important and applicable skills for graphic and digital design. However, Prof. Leftheris' lectures are rambling, long, and include too much extraneous info. She overexplains, which makes it difficult to stay engaged and present with the instruction. She is knowledgable, but needs to be more concise. She loses a lot of attention with the format of the class. However, she is extremely friendly and personable, and a great person to go to with specific questions about art and design.

This class was extremely tedious at times so it is in your best interested to stay engaged during lessons and lectures. Projects are pretty specific but are a great way to introduce you to digital media. You will learn a lot whether you find it interesting or not.
Michelle is a great professor and is very accommodating to student needs. The class is very slow-paced, though, and a good way to get an art credit our of the way. Material and projects were still very interesting and fun to do.
Michelle was always really enthusiastic in every class. The class is made up of a lot of learning lecture days followed by out-of-class projects and then a full class critique for most projects. As someone who came into the class with prior knowledge of design, I found it slow-moving at times, but for someone who is completely new, I think the speed is well thought out. There is plenty of time to create work you are proud of, and without real grading, it comes down to the student to get the rewards of the class.

A great class if you are looking to get your art distributions out of the way. The class moves relatively slow and it very lecture-heavy, which is something you should keep in mind if you want an art class with a bigger focus on creating art in class.
