This class is quite advanced for a beginner-level drawing course. With prior drawing experience this class is not overly difficult, but the homework and projects do demand a time commitment if you want to complete them well. For those with no prior drawing experience, this would be a difficult class - assignments very quickly ramp up from introductory material to fairly advanced techniques and expectations. That being said, Este was very accommodating to students' needs and requests for extra time on assignments. Do not let the work pile up.

This is NOT an introductory level course. This is a course designed for studio art majors or similar levels. I came into the course expecting to learn the basics such as how to hold a pencil, yet, week three we were doing a photorealistic self portrait. I think Estefania is a fantastic high level professor, however, it is not for a non-studio art major.
I've had a great experience in this class, the feedback I received was clear and concise. However, the lecture hours are long and in my opinion, you truly need to enjoy art to flourish in this course. It's project-based and moves fast, I know for someone completely new to art it might be difficult. Doesn't mean you won't have a great experience though.
I LOVE Este! She is the best art professor I have had yet at Midd. She is so understanding and loves teaching students. She wants to help you learn even if you have no art experience! I wish she taught more courses at Midd, although she is a visiting professor. I highly recommend taking this course as one of the prerequisites to studio art.
This is a very project-heavy course. If you're just looking to fulfill an ART credit, then this may not be for you - you have to put in a lot of effort and time to complete the assignments, so you need to have some intrinsic motivation. There was a good progression of difficulty, working to learn skills before using them later. I struggled with the final project where we had to tie everything together and come up with a theme independently.

I have always really been into art and as someone who has mostly stayed within the same style of art but this class definitely forced me to try new modes. Each week or so we would focus on a new technique from drawing to pastels to water color and this really allowed me to expand my knowledge of art.
I really enjoyed the course and I love the professor!!! Very supportive of student works and would accommodate deadlines if there is an emergency. A little hard to contact over email, but everything else about this course is perfect.
Este was a terrific teacher. She was very accommodating to anything that came up throughout the semester. The class was pretty fast paced but also very interesting and I feel like I learned a lot and got much better at drawing. I would absolutely take another class with Este in the future!
Good course to take if you are interested in learning about art, there is a fair amount of work you need to complete on your own, but if you are focused in class, it is not that hard. Some projects are a lot harder than others, but they are relatively straightforward overall. It is important to note that your work does get "critiqued" by the whole class and the teacher in front of EVERYONE in the class, so if you don't want to deal with that, I wouldn't take this course.

I really enjoyed this course as my first studio art course. It was cool learning art through a different way. Professor Puerta is very enthusiastic and I learned about various artists. It was also great seeing everyone else's art.
