Around the world, the movement has taken different approaches to make claims for equitable political and social rights. Simultaneously, feminism as an intellectual project has shifted how we approach knowledge production and craft scholarship. Through case studies, we will explore how the histories and cultural contexts of different parts of the world shape the practice of feminism. We will also analyze the efficacy of specific activist projects.

GSFS 0310Beyond #Me Too: Feminist Activism against Sexual Violence Since the 19th century feminist activism has sought to mitigate and redress the effects of sexual violence. Through a series of case studies, in this course we will examine the ways in which activists have contested and redefined our understandings of sexual violence. By addressing the differences in national and global activist moments, historical and contemporary, the course will help clarify how activism helps reshape the sphere of the political. Each case study will also draw attention to the ways in which feminists have engaged with the categories of difference and the politics of marginalization. The critical lens developed will help students imagine options that sidestep carceral justice or judicial reform.

0 reviewsS21Sujata is an AMAZING professor who is so kind, passionate, and smart. As someone who had never taken a gender studies class, so many of the things that she said were things I'd never thought of before. I'm not interested in Gender studies at all and won't be pursuing any more classes in it, so the material wasn't my favorite. Talking about the care work system isn't something that I've ever done before, so it was interesting. The class is made up of three different projects where you create a story using the information in class. This was my favorite part of the class. You get to be so creative and apply the information. If you don't get something in class, it's ok because you can focus on the thing that you understand. You have to annotate the readings so you have to do them, but you can read the majority of it and understand what the concepts are. I enjoyed it and would take another class with her if I was more interested in it.

I thought that this class was interesting, but a lot of time the lectures felt too slow paced. It was hard to stay focused. The material was worthwhile and the professor is very interested in what she is teaching. The grading on essays were very chill, but sometimes the assignments were crunched all together.
This class was extremely interesting. The information I learned from this class I've used continuously since. Sujata is extremely knowledgeable and such a kind teacher. She is always there if you need help with the main assignment that we worked on throughout the semester, which was a storymap. It was fun and allowed us to be creative but also include knowledge from the class.
