The teachers try their best for this J-term class. The only thing is that you will be studying for a quiz daily. At least 20 new vocabulary words or a new set of kanji to study daily. Grammar is also something you have to keep in mind and practice. The class is very demanding and forces you to grasp new material very quickly. Otherwise, you'll fall behind on homework and quizzes. Manage your schedule well however and you'll do fine, but lectures are long and the days are grueling for the Japanese learner!

Abe Sensei is the best teacher in the Japanese department. She is really nice and very accommodating. If you're tired though, you will definitely be falling asleep in her class. Luckily, it is easy to self learn what you missed. Just don't miss class because you're tired. Show up as attendance is key to getting an A.
I definitely recommend the course for people with some kind of basic Japanese or linguistics background. There weren't any exams, but we had very one short quiz and an exercise each week, one presentation throughout the semester, and a research paper. Overall super interesting and learned a lot more about Japanese culture through the language!
