I took this class because I was interested in Japanese and was curious about linguistics. The class wasn’t hard; we had weekly quizzes about the linguistics material that we go over in class. There were readings to annotate and two essays as well. Abe-sensei was enthusiastic about the material, but the class could’ve been organized better and I feel like I didn't gain a lot of knowledge in linguistics regardless.

Japanese 401 was not a difficult course because Abe-sensei accommodates her students very well for the homework, essay, and exams. Unfortunately, despite the class being rather chill, the teaching style in this class felt unorganized and the weekly quizzes changed format every time. I found it difficult to memorize the kanji and generally be motivated to learn grammar as most of it was self-guided.

abe sensei is a very nice professor, but this course felt more aligned with folks who may have had more japanese fluency coming out of study abroad or language school. lots of the readings and homework required looking up several dozen new kanji that we haven't mastered or been familiar with, which was kind of a struggle. if you are comfortable looking up new kanji every new sentence or already possess a good grasp on kanji, you'll be alright otherwise
