Introduction to Critical Data Studies A data-driven economy is based on the production, sharing and reuse of trustworthy datasets. The processes to generate, share and reuse data are subject to organizational, political, institutional, and economic forces. Data are never raw, they are cooked. In this course, students will examine how data are generated within organizational contexts and made portable through a social scientific and humanistic lens. Through a combination of reading, writing, and discussing peer reviewed research, students will learn about the social aspects of data. Each week students will learn and discuss concepts such as organizational forms for data, data cultures; information infrastructure. Students produce a research project that focuses on compiling a biography of a dataset. Sarika Sharma is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Texas-Austin in the Critical Data Studies Lab. Her work examines emerging information policy and its impact on the preservation, storage and reuse of information./
