Social Roots of Env Inequality
The Social Roots of Environmental Inequality Rising temperatures, climate disasters, toxicity, extractivism. How can sociology help us understand some of the most pressing environmental issues of our times? In this course we will examine environmental problems through multiple sociological lenses that center questions of power, agency, and solidarity. We will begin by interrogating the nature-society divide and its consequences for the analysis of socio-ecological problems. We will then examine a range of case studies from around the globe to consider how factors such as race, class, gender, and nationality fragment experiences of and orientations towards environmental issues. We will conclude by critically evaluating intended and unintended consequences of various responses to socio-ecological problems.
