History Of Rome
History of Rome This course is an introductory survey of Roman history, from the emergence of the Republic to the influence of Rome on the western world. In the first half of the course we will study the origins of Rome's rise to dominance, the conquest of the Mediterranean and its effect on Roman society, and the crumbling of political structures under the weight of imperial expansion. In the second half, we will study the empire more broadly, starting with the emperors and moving out to the daily lives of people around the Mediterranean. The course will end with the importance of Rome for the Founding Fathers. We will read from authors including Polybius, Plutarch, Appian, Caesar, Suetonius, Tacitus, Juvenal, and Pliny.

History of Rome is a great course. There is definitely a lot of reading but it is interesting and doable. The course consists of multiple papers, a midterm, final, and discussions. The exams were difficult but doable if you studied enough. The discussions were thoughtful but you definitely needed to read the materials in depth before class. Overall a great course.
Professor Chaplin is one of the finest lecturers and professors at Middlebury. She is a subject matter expert and her lectures are incredibly interesting and compelling. There is a fair amount of reading but it is valuable and essential for discussion and the exams. Papers and Exams are not easy but if you do the exams they are fair. She is also incredibly kind, caring and accommodating.

This course was defiantly interesting and covered Roman history from the Republic to the Empire and did not cover any material past the separation of the Eastern and Western Roman Empires. There is a lot of reading, most of which is necessary to participate effectively in discussions and reading material is central on the tests. Chaplin definitely expects a lot, but is fair when it comes to grading.

Professor Chaplin is an amazing professor, her lectures are super engaging and really interesting. She's a tough grader and expects a lot from your writing, but gives detailed feedback. Chaplin is super nice and genuinely wants to get to know her students. Im never bored in this class, even if the workload can be a little heavier at times.
Professor Chaplin is one of the best professors at Middlebury. She is extremely accommodating and fair in her grading, but her exams are intense and as are her essay comments. I personally did not find Roman history to be particularly interesting, but Professor Chaplin made me truly appreciate it, and I would not have wanted to take this class with anyone else.
Professor Chaplain is awesome and is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the course material. There was a lot of readings but only two writing assignments and two tests. Discussion participation was a big part of grading.
Great course and Chaplin was a fantastic prof. A fair bit of reading and a lot of it is necessary to engage with properly, since the tests and discussions are based on it. The tests are easy provided you put in the study time- she literally tells you everything that will be on it, so if you study properly you will do well. The lectures were fine but the discussions were engaging. I really enjoyed this class.

Chaplin is an awesome professor, by far the most interesting lecturer I have had here. She is very knowledgable and class often feels like a discussion in the best way. The discussion sections are the most interesting and valuable I have had here.
Great overview of Roman History. Chaplin is an awesome instructor, she knows all there is about Rome. Just make sure that you stay up to date with the readings otherwise the exams will be a bit rough.
