Singing Communities
Singing Communities Humans have used their voices in expressive communication for thousands of years, singing for work, comfort, love, praise, and many other purposes. In this course we will explore the role of singing in human communities to address questions about human need. Why do people sing together? Can singing enhance quality of life, and build community? We will sing, research singing traditions, and lead singing engagement activities in the Middlebury community. We will discuss our work with each other, and write about our experience. Interest in group vocal music is encouraged. No prior vocal experience required. 3 hrs. sem
This was a really fun FYS and it pushed me a bit out of my comfort zone, but in a good way. I got to connect with my classmates and build a real sense of community through the singing activities and discussions. Jeff made the class feel low-stress and supportive, and the workload was manageable. It is a great choice if you want a welcoming class with strong group interaction and are open to trying something different.

Great class! Enjoyed it a lot as my first year seminar and established good relationships with my classmates. We sing together as a group and outside lesson time we hangout as a group too. If you love singing with friends and learning about certain communities that sing, this class is perfect.
This was a very fun FYS. Jeff made sure this was a class he didnt want us to stress over, and was flexible in deadlines and such. We formed a really great connection as a group and had a lot of good discussion. highly reccomend
