Piano, Piano: The Cultural History of the Piano In this seminar we will take a closer look at the culture(s) surrounding one of the most popular musical instruments in the Western world and its place in people’s lives, in our imagination, and in the musical industry. Despite its rather ‘high-brow culture’ reputation, the piano has in fact shaped the past three hundred years of Western life in more than just musical ways, and our course will map the piano’s place in our culture and the way in which we educate and entertain ourselves. Space, time, leisure and the piano have formed various combinations that speak to all of our senses, and it is these combinations that will make our topic so fascinating and multi-faceted.

This course wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I believe that this course could've been something much bigger than it was. The professor is great, very accommodating, and I would probably like being in one of the German courses she teaches. It's just the course felt stale, and there wasn't anything exciting to look for, even from a musical aspect. I was interested in the class at the start of the term, but slowly drifted away and started to feel less and less interested in the topics discussed. Fantastic teacher, but a class about the cultural history of the piano might not be the same as what you think it might be.

Bettina is a lovely person, with the fun quirk you love to have as a teacher. However, the course felt underdeveloped and was very boring. Funnily enough, throughout the semester, it made me like the piano less. I would probably take a German course with Bettina in the future, but I don't suggest her for a course outside of her specialty. For incoming first-years, don't add this course to your batch selection, if it's even an option.

The course itself wasn't my favorite material ever, but the professor was amazing. She was extremely enthusiastic about the material as a whole and attempted to ensure each of us had an enjoyable experience in the class.
