Digital Platforms and Social Change /Google/, Airbnb, Etsy, Meta, and Netflix: what do they all have in common? They are digital platforms, aka business applications that run services, which theoretically make our lives easier. In this course, we will examine the social, political, and historical aspects of digital platforms. We will gain good practice in reading, writing, and speaking at the college level by using news articles, book chapters, and scholarly research on digital platforms. We will examine the organizational features of digital platforms where often hidden decisions shape content and services. We will also explore affordances and constraints of these applications in our lives. Finally, we will pause to consider the ways that digital platforms might transform our thoughts and actions and how they might give rise to social change.

This was a cool class and very relevant to the world we live in today. Professor Sharma was very knowledgeable, though I did feel some of the material was repetitive, and other concepts went over my head. The weekly memos were helpful, though I did find it a big jump to go from writing those to writing our final paper, which was 5000+ words. All this said, I learned a lot and the material was interesting, so I'm glad I took the class.

Dr. Sharma is a passionate teacher who cares about her students. Personally I found the readings repetitive at times and this class can be a little bit boring at times. Despite that I learned a lot about the subject material and have a decent great which is all I ask for in a first year seminar.
