The Lives of the Buddha
The Lives of the Buddha What is a buddha? How does a person become one? The life of the Buddha is one of the most influential stories ever, but it was not the focus of the earliest Buddhist literature. When narratives of his life (and previous lives) first appear in word and image, which concerns dominate them? How and why do later groups of Buddhists tell, interpret, and ritually enact his life story differently? We will focus on the telling and retelling of these lives over the long span and wide spread of the Buddhist tradition - and what they reveal about doctrine and practice as well as issues of gender, authority, and religious aspiration.

Prof. Morrison IS THE QUEEN!! She's such an amazing professor! She feeds us tea, snacks, rice, and cookies. She's incredibly passionate about what she teaches, which is extremely beneficial for the morale of the classroom. Although she assigns many readings, all of them are very interesting to read because they cover topics and ideas that are usually new to you. Honestly, I'm so glad that I had Prof Morrison as my FYS instructor and pre-major advisor!! If you are interested in Asian religions and have the opportunity to take her class, you definitely should!!

There is a lot of reading due but Professor Morrison clearly demonstrates that she has spent a lot of time choosing relevant and accessible texts. She has a lot of enthusiasm for teaching and was always forgiving of people being tired, but is also a fair grader and pushes us a lot in writing with fast deadlines and reasonably high standards. She has provided me with some of the best comments on my writing I have ever received and she clearly pays attention to each and every one of her students.

We had a lot of readings for this course, but the material is very interesting. You can see Professor Morrison's love for the subject shine through in every lecture she gave, and it made the class all the more intriguing for me. The essays are pretty toughly-graded, but she gives amazing feedback on them. She is very open, inviting, and an extremely endearing person. She was a great professor to have as a first year seminar, and she is an even better person. In class, we usually had a lecture combined with discussions. Professor Morrison is very receptive to any questions we had, not just about the class, but college as a whole. I would definitely recommend taking her.

Although there are constant readings in this class which can be a little tedious, the readings are extremely interesting and Morrison explains them all thoroughly in class. Discussions are stimulating and she really cares about what she is teaching which makes the class that much more compelling. She genuinely cares about her students and their first-year college experience and constantly aims to connect with us on a personal level and to help us in whatever ways she can.
