Social Issues & Public Policy
Social Issues and Public Policy This course examines current social issues and potential public policy remedies. We will use the tools of economics to explore important social issues such as income inequality, poverty, welfare reform, access to food, health care, housing, and education, climate change, and crime. While the text and lectures will focus on social issues at the national level, students will have the opportunity to explore social issues in Vermont through a semester-long research project.
This course was an incredible introduction to Middlebury. I was engaged throughout the entire semester and all of the reading were extremely relevant. I loved the feedback I received on my writing and the opportunities to improve. The research paper through the semester was enjoyable to write and on a topic of your choosing! I would highly recommend taking a class with Professor Holmes while at Middlebury!

This was a first year seminar course, so it mostly focused on improving your writing in a way that centers around your course. Professor Holmes brought in some really cool speakers and gave us valuable experiences in interviewing and writing research papers. She also is one of the nicest professors and really cares about her students!
This was my First Year Seminar. Jessica Holmes is a great professor and she was passionate about the topics discussed and very clear about what she needed us to do. It was a good class and we covered important topics.
