Arabian Oral Poetry
Arabian Oral Poetry The Arabian Peninsula enjoys a rich legacy of oral poetry and written poetry with oral roots. In this seminar, we will explore how the oral poetic traditions of the Arabian Peninsula have evolved over time, starting with pre-Islamic odes from the 6th century CE and ending with contemporary poetry circulated on social media. In addition to reading, analyzing, and enjoying individual poetic texts and performances, we will consider how the concept of oral literature emerged with Milman Parry’s Oral Formulaic thesis, giving rise to new ways of reading historical texts, understanding the art of performance, and reckoning with the cultural implications of literacy.

I found that I learned a lot in this course surprisingly, because we covered the same topic for a while. Professor Liebhaber is really passionate about the course having lived in the Middle East for some time, and so I found him to be knowledgeable which is always a plus!
This class was very slow paced and it felt like we talked about the same thing for pretty much the entire semester. Professor Liebhaber is very friendly and is clearly passionate about the topic, but I don't think that he was able to make anyone else in the class passionate about the material. That said, it was a very low stakes and low workload class that had its interesting moments.
