Genes and Disease
Genes and Disease in the Nervous System Numerous disorders in the nervous system have a genetic component; some are due to a mutation in a single gene while others demonstrate a more complex mode of inheritance. In this course we will focus on understanding the genetic basis of neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Fragile-X, autism spectrum disorder, Huntington’s, motor neuron degeneration, Parkinson’s, and muscular dystrophy. From classical genetics to modern genomics, we will explore the discovery of the genes involved in brain disorders as well the development of animal models to reveal underlying molecular mechanisms. We will cover these topics through a combination of lectures and detailed analyses and discussions of primary research articles.
