Zu Zhai

This class is great—Professor Zhai is a great prof and the class is interesting and applicable to everyday life. Not hard to achieve A. Prof Zhai is engaged in teaching and will make time to meet with students. He clearly explains content during class. Textbook reading is not necessary—only tests students on lecture material. This is one of the only neuroscience courses that doesn't gatekeep to neuro or psych majors—take the class if you're an outside major. He covers all basic neuro content in the first couple lectures so you can get up to speed with all the neuro majors in the class. I only had taken AP psych prior to this class and it was easy to understand content and do well on exams.

this course covers a great deal of material, some of it stretching the boundaries of what can be considered behavioral neuroscience, but Professor Zhai is a great teacher and a makes the content engaging nonetheless. His exams require a lot of memorization (but so does this subject in general) but are graded very fairly and don't require too much knowledge of superfluous detail. There are required readings for every class, but I personally did very few of them and got fine grades on assessments and homework. Despite what seems to be the popular opinion, I find Zhai to be a very enjoyable professor and person to be around and I like his teaching style a lot.

If you have to take this course, take it with Zhai. He is my favorite professor. His tests were really difficult, but we had an entire day to do them, and he gave us everything we need to prepare. As long as you review the content on the slides you will be perfectly fine. There are no surprises in Zhai's class and if you pay attention you will do well. Just be prepared to put in hard work! The animal labs are super fun too.
