There were daily exercises just to apply the reading, which was really helpful to be able to gather the main points of the reading without reading every word. This was a very helpful introduction to what linguistics entails and I recommend it for anyone interested in how languages are structured or used.

Sultan is best prof in the dep. He was super chill and I learned so much. Class was always super fun. Lots of speaking which is great and we watched a lot of cultural videos. The readings in class were all interesting and at a good level. Would 1000% recommend. He's not very linenet if you miss class so be aware of that. Overall would take again. Professor Soltan was a delight. He has a very calm demeanor but clearly cares a lot about his work and students. The course was a very introductory overview of linguistic concepts. The work was very manageable, and I even enjoyed sections of our required textbook. Homework problem sets often felt like working out word puzzles. His grading is pretty fair, and in some cases I would say pretty easy. We had one 15 min group presentation and then a couple mini ones. Exams were low stress for me. As long as you keep up with your readings and pay attention in class, this is a great course.
