Sebnem Gumuscu
This was hands-down my favorite class I have ever taken at Middlebury. The in-class discussion were always very interesting, and Sebnem is a great professor. I would 100% recommend someone to take this class!
I highly encourage all majors to take this course. It is based on real-time relevant information on how our democracy and democracies around the world are backsliding. The Prof is really helpful and pushes you to think outside the box.
This class was a really chill and enjoyable introduction to the Politics of the Middle East. You don’t need a lot of background knowledge going in, the course does a good job laying out the key historical and political context of the region. We covered important themes like state formation, nationalism, authoritarianism, and regional conflicts, but in a way that felt accessible rather than overwhelming. One of the best parts is that you actually get to understand the region beyond the typical headlines or stereotypes. Discussions and readings help you see the diversity of political systems and experiences across different Middle Eastern countries. The workload is reasonable and the environment is low-stress, so it’s a great option if you’re curious about the Middle East or want to broaden your global perspective without feeling buried in assignments.
